Welcome to our Blog!

Hello readers! We decided to start this blog as a way of sharing our journey with you, our readers, friends, community and well…random strangers too. Whoever you are, welcome!

Today we want to share Tidepool’s origin story. Some of you might know it already and many of you probably don’t. Either way, we hope you enjoy this story that will set the context for you because without context in life, very little makes sense.

In early March,on a Friday - we decided that we were going to co-found Tidepool Games. We were sitting in a Co-working space on Main street in Vancouver talking through the logistics of setting up a new IP, and what the ins and outs of the game would be. Although Rob refused to drink the on-tap kombucha, it was a convenient and bright place for an onsite - and amidst the grey days of early spring, a cozy spot to launch a game studio. The timing however, was seriously set to hard mode but we knew this already, the past couple years in games have been challenging.

The games industry had just seen record lay-offs in the last six months, and amidst studio closures, uncertain funding futures, and everyone going into what felt like an industry wide shelter in place order - we had decided that this was the time to start our own game studio.

So be it.

The “we” in Tidepool Games? Two industry veterans from the Vancouver game development scene. Leading the charge as Chief Executive Officer the ever ebullient and determined Carolina Ellis, an active advocate for gaming in the Vancouver scene, and former co-founder of Gasket Games. Co-founder and Chief Creative Officer is Rob Baxter - a crafty designer with two decades of experience in leading teams to deliver on everything from individual game features to fully fleshed out videogame experiences.

What started as an idea the previous year, amidst the initial waves of studio restructuring and layoffs, became a solid idea that began to coalesce into Tidepool's first intellectual property. We’re currently prototyping and we’ll share more information about this IP soon. For now, we will tell you that it’s an RPG for PC & Console. Here is a little piece of concept art from our game.

What else have we been up to? We have been fundraising which involves a lot of pitching to investors and publishers. For us this means lots of pitch decks, meetings and relationships forming. Luckily we both enjoy this part of the process and we're looking forward to many more conversations over the years to come.
